Sending Your Manuscript for Editing

What to Send

Please send a photocopy or print out of your manuscript or segment. Never send an original or only copy.

We will keep a photocopy of the annotated pages your editor sends back to you in case they get lost in the return mail and also so your editor can refer to his notes when consulting with you.

It's a good idea to send a letter with each segment. It should specify the pages, the title of the work, and a description of where this segment fits into a larger whole.

It can also outline your general needs, your specific concerns and any broader issues you would like addressed as the editor reads your text. In other words: what are you looking for in your editor's response--"I'm worried that the dialog is stilted." -- "This chapter seems to lose energy and turn into a summary of my work history. How can I make it more dramatic?" -- "I change point of view here to get the story from my uncle's side. Is it disjointed?" -- Should I put the anecdote about the sewing machine in this section?--it's not chronological but it seems to fit."

How to Send It

You may submit a hard copy (print out) with these specifications:
  • 8.5 x 11 pages
  • font size 12
  • text double-spaced
  • ample (1.5 inch) margins.
  • page numbers.
  • header or footer with title and your name.

  • If you prefer to send an electronic copy, please be sure it meets these specifications:
  • MicroSoft Word document
  • on Zip Disk or CD
  • font size 12
  • text double-spaced
  • ample (1.5 inch) margins
  • page numbers.
  • header or footer with title and your name.
  • avoid manual formatting (use the MicroSoft defaults or settings in the Format menu).

  • In most instances, we prefer to work on hardcopy rather than use a text editing program on your digital file because handwritten notes allow you to choose which changes to make as you rewrite. So we will print a copy of your document for your editor to work on.

However, if you want your editor to rewrite your text, s/he can work most efficiently on the computer. In this case, we may return a print out to you for your approval, or an electronic copy with annotations if you prefer.

Where distances are long or time is short, e-mailing your manuscript may be the best choice. Smaller segments may be pasted into the body of an e-mail message. Longer works should be sent as attachments and should meet the electronic copy specifications above.

    Soleil Lifestory Network
95 Gould Road, Lisbon Falls, ME 04252

    Send your electronic copy )to:

The First Step: Are we "a fit?"-- 2-hour Trial Editing

We find it works well to begin with an exploratory 2-hour committment.

    It works like this:

You send a sample portion of your manuscript (20 to 30 double-spaced, typed pages) and a check (we also accept credit cards) for two hours of work.

Your editor reads and responds exactly as s/he will if you contract with us for your full project.

The charge for this introductory editing is $160.

This trial run allows you to 'check us out,' and for us to assess both your manuscript and our work-together compatibility.

After all, we want to be sure we give you the help you need to write the very best manuscript you can.
