  • Tips for Success
    Your story must:
  • be in line with the writing directives of Turning Memories Into Memoirs/A Handbook for Writing Lifestories (Soleil Press, 2008, 272 pages, $24.95). Order a copy and receive FREE S&H when you mention the anthology.
  • remember to "Show and not Tell."
  • use revealing details.
  • avoid preaching: let the reader arrive at independent conclusions.
  • be written from a place of affection and respect for your subject.
  • be concise, complete, clear, and coherent.
  • have half of your adjectives and adverbs eliminated in favor of more descriptive writing techniques (dialogue, action, characterization).

  • We suggest you:
  • Work with a writing buddy or writing group to polish your story. Have at least two people give you an expert critique and integrate their comments into your story. Do not submit a story for the anthology without having taken this step. Once at the Soleil office, we will edit your story but only if it is nearly ready for publication. We will not work with a rough draft.
